On Wednesday, Elon Musk announced via his Twitter account that Tesla was opening solar glass roof orders. He tweeted that the “solar roof can be ordered for almost any country. Deployment this year in the US and overseas next year.” He went on to say “black glass smooth and textured will be first. Tuscan and French Slate in about six months.”
By afternoon on the east coast of North America, the webpage for ordering the solar roof was activated. It provided a price estimate for the installation plus powerwall, and showed the savings that would occur from the system.
Analysts were quick to point out that the prices were significantly cheaper than expected. In a CNBC article, the price per square foot was estimated to cost almost $3.00 less than what was projected by Consumer Reports. On Bloomberg.com, Hugh Bromley, a solar analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance said, “the pricing is better than I expected, better than everyone expected.”
