Recently, Workhorse Group Inc. posted an online contact form dedicated to gauging consumer interest in its W-15 range-extended electric pickup truck.  Up until now, the vehicle was marketed exclusively to fleet operators.  The Ohio-based OEM states on its website that it currently has nearly 5000 letters of intent from municipalities, corporations, and public utilities.

The preliminary specifications of the W-15 are 460 horsepower with an 80 mile all-electric range, and a 310 mile hybrid range per tank.  The company says it has a 2200 pound payload capacity, and a 5000 pound towing capacity.  It features two electric motors providing all wheel drive capabilities, Panasonic 18650 lithium-ion batteries, and a three cylinder range-extending internal cumbustion engine.

The Workhorse W-15 recently had its unveiling at the ACT Expo in Long Beach, California, where the company encouraged reporters and fleet managers to test drive a prototype in a parking lot.  “We built it and designed it from a blank piece of paper for fleet use,” said CEO Steve Burns at the ACT Expo.

According to the Business Insider, Burns said “When we introduced it… we suddenly had tons of requests from consumers to buy it. We were caught a little off guard.”  If Workhorse decides to pursue consumer sales, the company expects to begin production in 2018.
